Love Letters of Great Men/Women (2008/9) –  Ursula Doyle (editor)

  • No.7 & 8 ‘A collection of a novelist’s essays and/or letters’

Similar to my Macbeth post, instead of attempting to review famous novelist’s love letters (what would be the point, they’re all fabulous) I feel it’d be more interesting to pick out some personal favourites.

Gustave Flaubert (1821-80) – French novelist

jl

Beautiful imagery from Flaubert to prolific writer, Louise Colet

Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) – novelist and clergyman

as

Sterne using an endearing (?) term to his lover, Catherine Fourmantel, a singer

Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) – modernist short story writer

es

Katherine’s  very precise letter to her love, John Middleton Murray

Nora Doyle (1917-2007)
